Halloween is quickly coming up and everyone is entitled to one good scare. That way, those of you out there that only have newer systems can find some excellent games to play that are part of the horror genre. Now, I will say that this is a more modern list of games, but some of the games on this list are not going to be brand new. Basically, the only criteria these games have to meet in order to be included on the list is that they have been released on the latest generation of consoles or they’ve been released on the PC.

Slender is a game that not a lot of people have heard about. This game wasn’t highly promoted and there weren’t television commercials for it, etc… However, this game earned its popularity via YouTube, because a ton of people recorded themselves playing the game, as it’s known as being one of the scariest games of all time. Before playing the game, you should go to the official Slender website and read up on the whole mythology behind it.

This game is a very simple game to play with a very simple premise. All you have to do is walk around in the dark and collect newspaper clippings. Once you’ve collected all the clipping, you’re done and you’ve beat the game. However, you have to avoid the Slender man while looking for these clippings. It’s one of those games that builds suspense and you never knew where the Slender man could be lurking. This game is an excellent game to play by yourself with all the lights off. Also, it’s free and could virtually be run on any PC or laptop, so you have no excuse not to own this game.

Amnesia is a game that’s also known for being one of the scariest video games of all time and reminds me a lot of Slender. This game is truly a survival horror game to the root, because you don’t have any weapons. All you have is a flashlight and you basically just have to survive. It does an excellent job at building suspense and messing with your mind. It reminds me a lot of Slender, in all honesty. Also, there’s a sequel coming out to this game very soon, which is entitled “Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs,” so you may want to keep your eyes out for that one, as well.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is a hugely successful comic book series, as well as a hugely successful television series. Therefore, it came as no surprise that a game would be in the works. The game has a nice feel to it, as well as a whole new story that plays out in front of your eyes. In other words, don’t think that this game is just going to be a rehash of what you’ve seen on television or read in the comics. Best of all, these games can be purchased fairly cheaply on the latest generation of consoles, as well as on the PC.

Dead Rising 1 & 2

Dead Rising was one of the very first games I picked up for my 360, because I had played it at a friend’s house. This is one of those games that is just fun to play over and over again. The first one takes place in a mall, so you have a lot to explore and a lot of items at your disposal. One of the greatest things about these games is that pretty much everything in the game can be used as a weapon. Dead Rising 2 puts you in Las Vegas, so you can only imagine how fun the game can be. I’d highly suggest picking up either of these games, which you can purchase very cheaply at this point.

Left 4 Dead 1 & 2

If you want a zombie first person shooter that plays like a watered down version of Call of Duty, you’re going to love the Left 4 Dead series. You’re part of a group of survivors that are trying to make navigate through a zombie infested world, traveling from safe house to safe house. It’s pretty fun and since you’re running around in a group, you can invite some friends over and play multiplayer. Also, you can play the game online with some online friends in your group of survivors.
